The U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has deployed air assets in response to the deadly active shooter incident in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho, where multiple firefighters came under sniper fire — some fatally — in what authorities have described as a calculated and targeted ambush.
The violent attack unfolded on Sunday afternoon when emergency crews responded to a wildfire near Canfield Mountain. Shortly after their arrival, gunfire erupted. Officials later confirmed that the gunman had intentionally started the fire to lure first responders into the area before opening fire, in what has been described as a “total ambush.”

Multiple firefighters were struck by gunfire. Two have been confirmed dead, while others remain injured, with one in critical condition. The gunman, who authorities say acted alone, was later found dead near the scene following a standoff involving law enforcement and specialized SWAT units.

In the wake of the tragedy, DHS activated air support assets to assist in real-time coordination, surveillance, and threat assessment, underscoring the severity of the situation and the growing concern over targeted violence against emergency personnel.

“This was a deliberate and cowardly act against the very people who risk their lives to protect our communities,” said Sheriff Bob Norris during a press briefing. “We’re devastated, and we’re mobilizing every available resource to support the investigation and prevent further harm.”

The fire, which began as a small blaze, spread to over 20 acres as firefighting efforts were delayed due to the active shooter threat. Air response units helped in monitoring the perimeter, assisting ground forces in ensuring the area was secure before firefighters could resume operations.
