The streets of Belgrade have exploded in defiance as tens of thousands of Serbians rally for change, demanding an end to President Aleksandar Vučić’s 12-year grip on power.
What began as a student-led movement has swelled into one of the largest protests in Serbia’s recent history, with demonstrators calling for snap elections and an end to what many describe as a regime built on corruption, media repression, and creeping authoritarianism.
Chants of “Freedom!” and “Down with Vučić!” echoed through the capital as protesters marched on government buildings, braving waves of tear gas, baton charges, and mass arrests. Clashes with police intensified overnight, with security forces deploying riot gear in a bid to suppress the uprising — but the crowd held firm.

The unrest marks a tipping point in public sentiment after more than a decade under Vučić’s rule, during which critics say democratic institutions have been hollowed out, independent media silenced, and opposition figures systematically targeted.

Allegations of high-level corruption, electoral manipulation, and abuse of power have only fueled the fire, igniting a youth-led resistance determined to reclaim Serbia’s democratic future.
“This is not just about politics — it’s about dignity,” said one student protester, standing amid a sea of banners and Serbian flags. “We want elections, we want justice, and we want our country back.”
