The European Union leaders have voiced deep concern over the escalating humanitarian crisis in Gaza, urging Israel to fully lift its blockade and allow for the unimpeded delivery of humanitarian aid.

The appeal came on Thursday during a high-level European Council summit in Brussels, where heads of state and government addressed mounting civilian casualties and the need for an urgent de-escalation of hostilities.

The summit’s final communiqué called for an “immediate, unconditional ceasefire” and the release of all hostages. EU leaders also emphasized the importance of protecting civilians, humanitarian workers, and essential infrastructure—including hospitals, schools, and United Nations facilities.

“Israel must comply with international law,” the statement read, adding that “sustained distribution of humanitarian assistance at scale” must be prioritized throughout Gaza.

The Council reaffirmed its readiness to contribute to peacebuilding efforts, urging all parties to avoid actions that could jeopardize long-term prospects for stability.

As part of its diplomatic approach, the EU pledged continued discussions on Israel’s adherence to human rights obligations under Article 2 of the EU-Israel Association Agreement. A follow-up on this matter is expected in July, contingent on developments on the ground.

Beyond Gaza, the EU summit also addressed the situation in the West Bank, where leaders condemned illegal settlement expansion and rising settler violence, particularly in East Jerusalem. They expressed support for further sanctions targeting extremist settlers and their backers.

On Iran, the EU reiterated its firm stance that Tehran must never be allowed to develop nuclear weapons. Leaders called on Iran to fulfill its obligations under the Non-Proliferation Treaty and expressed ongoing support for diplomatic negotiations aimed at preventing regional escalation.

Turning to Syria, EU leaders welcomed recent steps to ease economic sanctions, while emphasizing the importance of a peaceful, inclusive political transition free from foreign interference. The Council reiterated the need to uphold Syria’s sovereignty and territorial integrity under international law.

Regarding Lebanon, the EU reaffirmed its support for the country’s stability and sovereignty, backing the efforts of new authorities and the continued role of the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL).
