In a dramatic escalation of geopolitical tensions, Iran’s parliament has voted in favor of closing the Strait of Hormuz — a move that could severely disrupt global energy markets and further destabilize the Middle East.
The decision, announced on Sunday by a senior Iranian lawmaker, comes as a direct response to what Tehran describes as continued U.S. aggression and the international community’s inaction.

The Strait of Hormuz, located at the southern mouth of the Persian Gulf, is one of the most strategically critical waterways in the world. Nearly 20% of the world’s oil supply — an estimated 17 to 18 million barrels per day — flows through this narrow maritime corridor, linking energy producers in the Gulf with markets across the globe.

According to the lawmaker, a strong consensus was reached among members of Iran’s parliament (Majlis) to support the closure. However, the final authority to enforce such a decision lies with Iran’s Supreme National Security Council, which is yet to formally approve the measure.

“This is a necessary step to protect our national sovereignty and respond to the hostile actions of the United States,” the senior official stated. “The world cannot remain silent while our people are threatened, and our rights ignored.”

The proposal follows a wave of escalating events in the region, including military strikes, tightened sanctions, and ongoing threats exchanged between Washington and Tehran.
Analysts warn that any closure of the Strait would have far-reaching consequences, from skyrocketing oil prices to global supply chain disruptions and the potential for military confrontations in the Gulf.
