In a significant leadership transition within West Africa’s top regional body, President Julius Maada Bio of Sierra Leone has been elected as the new Chairman of the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government.
The announcement was made during the 67th Ordinary Session of the bloc held in Abuja, Nigeria’s capital, marking the end of Nigerian President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s tenure.
The leadership change comes after two consecutive terms by President Tinubu, who was first elected on July 9, 2023, in Guinea-Bissau and re-elected in 2024 to maintain continuity in addressing the region’s pressing challenges.

Tinubu officially handed over the role to President Bio during the high-level gathering, where regional leaders convened to assess ECOWAS’s progress and chart a new course.

Contrary to earlier reports speculating that Senegalese President Bassirou Diomaye Faye had been selected during a closed-door meeting, the final consensus favored President Bio. His appointment signals a new phase for ECOWAS as it navigates complex issues ranging from political instability to economic integration.

In his acceptance speech, President Bio outlined his vision for the bloc, focusing on four key priorities:
– Restoring constitutional order and deepening democracy in member states,
– Revitalising regional security cooperation to tackle threats like terrorism and coups,
– Unlocking economic integration across West Africa to promote trade and development,
– And strengthening institutional credibility within ECOWAS to restore public trust and ensure effective governance.

President Bio’s leadership comes at a time when ECOWAS is facing significant internal and external pressures — including political upheavals, economic uncertainty, and regional insecurity. Observers will be watching closely to see how his leadership influences ongoing efforts to stabilize the region and promote unity among member states.
With the baton now officially passed, West Africa enters a new chapter under President Bio’s stewardship, one that aims to advance peace, prosperity, and democratic values across the region.
