Security tensions in Iran heightened on Friday as Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) Intelligence Unit reported the discovery of a pickup truck loaded with FPV (First-Person View) suicide drones in the northeastern holy city of Mashhad.
According to IRGC sources, the vehicle was located during routine security operations, and initial assessments suggest the drones were prepped for potential targeted strikes, raising serious concerns about infiltration and sabotage attempts within Iran’s borders.
The discovery comes at a time of escalating regional instability, and authorities say the presence of such a threat in a major religious and population center is particularly alarming. Mashhad, known for being one of the most revered cities in Shiite Islam, rarely sees such direct security threats.

Experts say FPV drones are typically used in modern asymmetric warfare, especially by non-state actors and militias. These drones, equipped with explosive payloads and remote-control capabilities, have been deployed in conflicts across the Middle East in recent years due to their stealth and precision strike potential.

While no group has yet claimed responsibility, IRGC officials are actively investigating the origin of the vehicle and how it managed to reach Mashhad undetected. Security around sensitive sites in the city has reportedly been intensified, and counter-terrorism units are conducting follow-up operations to rule out further threats.
The Iranian government has not yet issued a public statement, but insiders say the incident is being treated with utmost seriousness, particularly given the volatile regional atmosphere.
