Puntland security forces today carried out a coordinated air and ground operation targeting the last known defensive positions of Islamic State (IS) militants in Somalia, who are believed to be entrenched in the Ballade Sare caves, a remote and rugged terrain in the northeastern Bari region.
The pre-planned military campaign marks a significant phase in Puntland’s ongoing efforts to eliminate the remaining pockets of IS resistance in the region.
This operation follows a series of successful offensives over the past months that have steadily pushed IS-Somalia fighters deeper into isolated mountainous areas. The Ballade Sare cave complex, long considered one of the group’s most fortified hideouts, has posed a strategic and symbolic challenge to Puntland authorities and regional security forces.

As of now, military presence remains high in the region, with surveillance drones and reconnaissance teams monitoring for any escape attempts or reinforcements from other cells. The Somali federal government has praised Puntland’s continued commitment to regional security and pledged additional intelligence support to ensure the militants’ complete removal.
