Tragedy in Ahmedabad: Global Leaders Mourn Victims of Air India Plane Crash

In a heartbreaking incident that has sent shockwaves across the globe, an Air India aircraft carrying 242 passengers crashed near Ahmedabad, India, prompting an outpouring of condolences and solidarity from world leaders and international communities.

Pope Leo XIV expressed his “heartfelt condolences” to the families and friends of those who perished in the crash. In a solemn telegram shared by the Vatican’s Secretary of State, Cardinal Pietro Parolin, the Pope conveyed deep sorrow over the tragedy and offered prayers for the victims and for those involved in the challenging task of recovering bodies from the crash site.

Joining the chorus of grief, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni conveyed her sympathies via a post on social media. “Deeply saddened by the tragic plane crash in Ahmedabad. On behalf of the Italian Government and myself, I express my sincere condolences to the families of the victims and our full solidarity with the Indian people in this moment of great sorrow,” she wrote.

From South Asia, Muhammad Yunus, Chief Advisor of the Interim Government of Bangladesh, voiced his sorrow and emphasized Bangladesh’s solidarity with India. He remarked that the entire nation joins in prayer for the bereaved and the injured, reaffirming the deep bonds between the neighboring countries.

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen also offered her support, calling the tragedy “heartbreaking.” She assured Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the people of India of Europe’s solidarity, expressing heartfelt condolences to the grieving families.

Sri Lankan President Anura Kumara Dissanayake extended his deep sympathies, acknowledging not only the loss of those onboard but also the civilian casualties on the ground—including young medical students whose lives were tragically cut short. “At this moment of deep sorrow, the people of Sri Lanka stand in solidarity with India,” he stated.

The Embassy of the Islamic Republic of Iran in New Delhi expressed its deepest sorrow, offering prayers for the victims and the injured, and affirming Iran’s support for India during this dark hour. The embassy underscored the shared grief felt across borders and the importance of unity in the face of such tragedies.
