A violent raid has been carried out by militants linked to Jama’at Nasr al-Islam wal-Muslimin (JNIM) on the Boulkessi military base in Mali’s volatile Douentza region. The attack, which took place in the early hours, underscores the continuing instability and growing threat of jihadist violence in the Sahel.
Local reports confirm that heavily armed fighters stormed the military installation, engaging in a fierce exchange of fire with security forces. While the full extent of the casualties remains unclear, sources suggest both sides sustained losses. The Malian army has not yet released an official statement detailing the number of injured or dead.
Boulkessi, located near the border with Burkina Faso, has long been a strategic but vulnerable outpost in Mali’s ongoing counterterrorism efforts. This isn’t the first time the base has come under attack from jihadist groups, particularly those affiliated with al-Qaeda, including JNIM.

The assault comes amid a broader regional escalation, as militant groups exploit weak governance, ethnic tensions, and dwindling international military support following the withdrawal of French forces.
Security analysts warn that such attacks could continue unless there is greater coordination between regional governments and international partners to tackle terrorism in the Sahel.
