Tragedy unfolded Sunday night at the Union Gospel Mission men’s shelter in Salem, Oregon, after a mass stabbing incident left 11 people hospitalized. Authorities confirmed that a suspect has been arrested, and all victims are currently receiving medical care.
According to Salem police, emergency responders were dispatched to the downtown shelter following reports of multiple people being attacked with a knife. The victims—all adult males—suffered various degrees of injuries, but no fatalities have been reported as of this writing.
The horrifying attack took place inside the shelter, a facility that provides meals, emergency housing, and recovery programs to those in need. Witnesses described scenes of panic as shelter staff and guests tried to subdue the attacker before law enforcement arrived.

Police quickly took the suspect into custody at the scene. Officials have not yet released the individual’s identity or a possible motive, but an investigation is underway. Authorities stated there is no ongoing threat to the public.

The Union Gospel Mission expressed its sorrow and concern in a statement, saying, “We are devastated by this senseless act of violence. Our thoughts and prayers are with the injured and their families.”
Community leaders in Salem have called for increased mental health and security support in public shelters as the city grapples with growing homelessness and safety concerns.
