Elon Musk has officially stepped down from his role as the head of the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), a federal initiative aimed at reducing wasteful spending. The announcement came on Wednesday, with Musk confirming the end of his term and expressing gratitude to U.S. President Donald Trump for the opportunity to serve.
Musk, CEO of Tesla and SpaceX, stated that the mission of DOGE would “only strengthen over time as it becomes a way of life throughout the government.” His resignation, however, doesn’t signal a full exit. According to President Trump, Musk will continue to play an informal advisory role moving forward.

“Elon is terrific,” Trump said in a post on his Truth Social platform. “This will be his last day, but not really, because he will always be with us, helping all the way.” The president also announced a joint press conference with Musk at the Oval Office scheduled for Friday at 1:30 P.M. EST.
White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt emphasized that the work of DOGE will now be led by the President himself, his Cabinet secretaries, and DOGE-appointed officials.

“The DOGE leaders are each and every member of the President’s Cabinet — and the president himself — who is wholeheartedly committed to cutting waste, fraud, and abuse from our government,” Leavitt said Thursday.
Musk’s tenure with DOGE began after he pledged to cut $2 trillion in federal waste during the 2024 election campaign. After Trump’s re-election, the initiative was formalized, and the target was adjusted to $1 trillion—an ambitious goal that Musk himself set.

Musk is believed to have contributed over $250 million to support Trump’s presidential run, sparking debates over his increasing influence on federal governance. While critics raised concerns about the tech mogul’s involvement in shaping policy, the DOGE website claims the department has already saved $160 billion by canceling contracts, selling off assets, and implementing broad cost-cutting measures.
With Musk stepping aside, the Trump administration is doubling down on its commitment to trimming federal waste and maintaining DOGE’s momentum through a hands-on, Cabinet-led approach.
