A powerful eruption from the Sakurajima volcano in Kyushu, Japan, sent ash and smoke billowing into the sky on Tuesday, marking one of the most significant volcanic events in recent months in the region.

Located in Kagoshima Prefecture, Sakurajima is one of Japan’s most active volcanoes and has a long history of eruptions.

This latest activity has triggered heightened alerts from the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA), which raised the volcanic warning level and advised residents in nearby areas to remain on high alert and prepare for possible evacuation.

The eruption occurred suddenly, with a dramatic explosion sending a towering ash plume high into the atmosphere. Volcanic rocks and debris were hurled across the slopes, and authorities quickly issued advisories warning of potential pyroclastic flows and ashfall.

Local residents described the tremors and the rumbling sound that accompanied the explosion. “We heard a loud boom and saw a huge column of smoke rising above the volcano,” said one resident of Kagoshima City, which lies just across the bay from the volcano.

Air traffic in and around the region is being closely monitored, with some domestic flights reporting minor delays due to ash clouds. Authorities have also advised those living downwind of the volcano to stay indoors and use protective masks as the ash spreads across several districts.

Japan, situated along the Pacific Ring of Fire, is home to more than 100 active volcanoes. Sakurajima, once an island before lava flows connected it to the mainland, has been under continuous observation due to its frequent activity and proximity to populated areas.

While there have been no immediate reports of injuries or significant damage, officials remain cautious as seismic activity around the crater continues. Emergency response teams are on standby, and geological experts are closely analyzing the eruption to determine the likelihood of further volcanic activity in the coming days.

Residents and travelers in the area are advised to follow local advisories, remain vigilant, and monitor updates from official channels as the situation develops.
