The British government has announced a new humanitarian aid package worth £4 million ($5.4 million) for Gaza, as concerns grow over the worsening humanitarian crisis in the region. The announcement was made during UK Minister for Development Jenny Chapman’s visit to Israel and the occupied Palestinian territories on Wednesday.

Chapman criticized the Israeli government’s ongoing restrictions on humanitarian access, describing them as “abhorrent.” She stressed that the limited flow of aid into Gaza is unacceptable and counterproductive to achieving long-term stability.

“The Israeli government’s failure to allow full humanitarian access to aid workers is abhorrent. Far too few trucks are crossing into Gaza,” she stated. “The UK is clear – Israel will not achieve security through prolonging the suffering of the Palestinian people.”

The aid package will be delivered by the British Red Cross in collaboration with the Palestinian Red Crescent Society, aiming to provide urgent relief to civilians caught in the ongoing conflict.

This pledge follows Britain’s decision on Tuesday to pause free trade negotiations with Israel, citing Israel’s renewed offensive in Gaza as a cause for concern. UK Foreign Secretary David Lammy also called for the immediate end of the blockade that has severely restricted the flow of life-saving supplies to the region.

The UK’s stance marks a growing shift among Western allies, reflecting increasing pressure on Israel to ensure humanitarian access and address the deepening crisis in Gaza.
