U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio has pledged to intensify efforts to process visa applications ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup and the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics, citing major backlogs that could prevent travelers—particularly from Colombia—from securing entry in time.

Speaking before the House Foreign Affairs Committee on Wednesday, Rubio warned that unless significant changes are made to visa operations, some international visitors may miss the opportunity to attend the highly anticipated sporting events.

He highlighted Colombia as an example, stating that applicants from the country might already be too late unless processing capacity is expanded.

“If you haven’t applied for a visa from Colombia already, you probably won’t get here in time for the World Cup unless we go to double shifts,” Rubio said.

In response, the State Department is exploring several measures, including reassigning diplomats to visa-related services, launching round-the-clock visa processing at certain embassies, and introducing artificial intelligence tools to help streamline the renewal process.

These steps aim to relieve the mounting pressure on consular offices around the world and ensure a smooth experience for international fans and tourists. “This is a priority for the president. We want the World Cup and Olympics to be a success,” Rubio emphasized.

The move comes as the Trump administration enforces stricter immigration policies, which have contributed to a notable decline in tourism.

Representative Dina Titus, whose district includes Las Vegas, raised concerns over the dip in visitor numbers—particularly from Canada—blaming intensified scrutiny at U.S. borders and rhetoric that has strained diplomatic ties.

With the U.S., Mexico, and Canada co-hosting the 2026 World Cup, and Los Angeles set to host the Summer Olympics two years later, the Biden administration is now under pressure to balance national security with international hospitality to ensure the events are globally accessible and economically beneficial.
