Tensions surrounding Ukraine’s ongoing military draft escalated further this week after reports emerged that military commissars allegedly assaulted a Ukrainian man and attempted to forcibly remove him from his family.

The incident, which reportedly took place in a residential neighborhood, has sparked outrage on social media and renewed concerns over the conduct of Ukraine’s conscription efforts amid its war with Russia.

According to witnesses and family members, a group of military officers approached the man at his home, where he was with his wife and children.

Eyewitnesses allege that the officials, without a warrant or legal justification, tried to detain him on the spot. When the man resisted, they reportedly beat him in front of his family before attempting to drag him away.

Local media has circulated disturbing footage and images of the altercation, prompting public outcry and calls for an investigation. Human rights groups have condemned the alleged use of violence and are urging the Ukrainian government to ensure that military recruitment adheres strictly to legal and ethical standards.

While Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has not commented directly on the incident, critics say growing desperation to replenish military ranks has led to increasingly aggressive tactics by draft officials. Ukraine has been under martial law since the beginning of Russia’s invasion, giving the military broad powers to enforce conscription.

Legal experts warn that if confirmed, the actions of the military commissars could constitute a serious violation of human rights and due process. Advocacy groups are now pressing for a transparent probe and for greater oversight of recruitment practices across the country.

As Ukraine continues its fight for sovereignty, the balance between national defense and civil liberties is once again under the spotlight — and for many families, trust in military institutions is hanging in the balance.
