The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has launched emergency reconstruction work on three collapsed transmission towers along the 330kV Kainji–Birnin Kebbi line, following a major outage that plunged parts of Kebbi and Kaduna States into darkness.

The repair efforts mark a swift response to restore electricity in the affected regions after the towers gave way near Yauri town on Thursday, May 8, 2025.

In a statement issued over the weekend, TCN’s General Manager of Public Affairs, Ndidi Mbah, announced that the company has deployed three separate contractors to the site, each tasked with rebuilding one of the fallen towers.

According to Mbah, this multi-contractor approach is designed to fast-track the repair process and ensure the prompt restoration of power to thousands of affected homes and businesses.

“To mitigate the impact of the outage on Kaduna Electric and its customers, we have activated alternative supply routes,” Mbah explained.

She noted that bulk electricity is currently being channeled to Sokoto and Birnin Kebbi through a 132kV alternate transmission path: the Mando–Zaria–Funtua–Gusau–Talata Mafara–Sokoto–Birnin Kebbi line, which is being powered from the Mando Transmission Substation.

TCN has acknowledged the inconvenience caused and expressed gratitude for the patience and understanding shown by communities enduring the blackout. “Our contractors, alongside TCN engineers, are working round the clock to rebuild the towers and restring the affected portion of the 330kV line. We are committed to restoring full electricity supply as quickly as possible,” Mbah added.

Kaduna Electric also addressed the issue in a public statement signed by Abdulaziz Abdullahi, Head of Corporate Communication, via the company’s official X (formerly Twitter) account. The company confirmed the tower collapse and reassured its customers of ongoing efforts to resolve the outage.

This incident adds to a string of recent disruptions along the 330kV Kainji–Birnin Kebbi transmission corridor, which has experienced intermittent trips since 2024.

The latest collapse underscores ongoing concerns about the stability of Nigeria’s power transmission infrastructure and the urgent need for upgrades to prevent future breakdowns.

Despite these challenges, TCN reiterated its commitment to maintaining a robust and reliable national grid. As repair work continues, the company is urging residents and stakeholders in the affected areas to remain patient, assuring them that all hands are on deck to restore power and prevent further occurrences.

The swift mobilization of resources and the collaborative approach between contractors and TCN engineers offer a glimmer of hope that power will soon return to normal across the northwest region.
