At the 2025 Arab League Summit in Baghdad, United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres delivered a powerful and urgent message to regional leaders and the global community: the suffering of Palestinians in Gaza has reached unimaginable levels, and the world must take collective responsibility to end the war and secure lasting peace.

“Palestinians in Gaza have suffered beyond measure,” Guterres declared. “The risk of even greater devastation looms.”

Addressing an audience deeply concerned with the ongoing humanitarian catastrophe in the Gaza Strip, Guterres described the summit as a crucial moment for unified action. He emphasized that the international community has a moral obligation to go beyond political rhetoric and support meaningful efforts to relieve human suffering and prevent further bloodshed.

“This summit is an important signal,” he continued. “The world has a collective responsibility to support efforts to end this war, relieve profound human suffering, and secure lasting peace.”

In a poignant conclusion, Guterres reminded leaders that peace must be built not just with concrete and steel, but through justice, respect, and human dignity. “Lasting peace will be more than concrete and steel. It will be dignity, self-determination, and security.”

The Secretary-General’s remarks come at a critical time, as the conflict between Israel and Hamas intensifies, claiming tens of thousands of lives and displacing countless more. His speech underscored the urgent need for diplomacy, humanitarian aid, and a renewed commitment to a just solution rooted in international law and human rights.

As world leaders gathered in Baghdad, Guterres’ call served as a moral compass — a reminder that beyond the politics and power plays, it is the lives of innocent civilians, especially children and families in Gaza, that hang in the balance.
