In a newly released interview clip, Russian President Vladimir Putin stated that the use of nuclear weapons in Ukraine has not been necessary and expressed hope that such extreme measures will not be needed in the future.
The comments, broadcast on Russian state television and published via Telegram, offer a glimpse into the Kremlin’s current stance on the escalating war in Ukraine. “There has been no need to use those [nuclear] weapons and I hope they will not be required,” Putin said in response to a question regarding recent Ukrainian strikes on Russian territory.

He emphasized that Russia possesses sufficient strength and resources to bring the conflict to what he described as a “logical conclusion” that meets Russia’s strategic objectives.

Putin launched what the Kremlin refers to as a “special military operation” in February 2022, sending tens of thousands of troops into Ukraine. Although Russian forces were initially pushed back from Kyiv, they currently occupy roughly 20% of Ukraine, including substantial parts of the south and east.
Despite the prolonged violence, Putin has in recent weeks signaled a renewed interest in peace negotiations.

The possibility of nuclear escalation has loomed over the war since its outset. U.S. officials have acknowledged the real danger that Russia could resort to nuclear weapons—especially during moments of major battlefield setbacks. However, Putin’s latest remarks may be an attempt to ease such concerns and signal readiness for a strategic resolution.
As the war grinds on into its third year, international attention remains fixed on how the Kremlin plans to conclude its military campaign—and whether diplomacy might finally prevail over destruction.
