In a significant shift within the Trump administration, President Donald Trump announced Thursday that Mike Waltz, his current National Security Adviser, will be reassigned as the United States Ambassador to the United Nations.
The move comes amid swirling speculation over internal tensions and mounting fallout from a recent communications mishap involving classified military discussions.
Taking to his social media platform, Truth Social, President Trump shared the announcement, stating: “I am pleased to announce that I will be nominating Mike Waltz to be the next United States Ambassador to the United Nations. Mike Waltz has worked hard to put our Nation’s Interests first. I know he will do the same in his new role.”

In a notable dual-role decision, Trump also revealed that Secretary of State Marco Rubio will step in as the new National Security Adviser, while continuing his duties as America’s top diplomat. “Together, we will continue to fight tirelessly to Make America, and the World, SAFE AGAIN,” Trump declared.

The shake-up follows weeks of controversy surrounding Waltz’s alleged accidental inclusion of a journalist in a Signal chat where sensitive military strike plans in Yemen were being discussed.
Although Trump initially dismissed the incident as a “mistake” and defended Waltz against calls for resignation, insiders report the relationship between the two had cooled significantly in recent days.

Despite the criticism, Trump’s latest move suggests he still values Waltz’s experience and loyalty — choosing to reassign rather than remove him.

Mike Waltz, a former Republican congressman from Florida’s 6th district, joined the Trump administration in January after being re-elected in 2024 but declining to serve his next term in Congress. Before his political career, Waltz served as a Green Beret in the U.S. Army Special Forces, bringing a national security background to his government service.

His impending move to the United Nations comes at a critical time for U.S. foreign policy, as the Trump administration works to reshape America’s global role under its “America First” doctrine.
This marks the first major staffing change of Trump’s second term, signaling possible broader shifts within the White House’s national security team. With Waltz heading to the UN and Marco Rubio now holding two key foreign policy positions, the administration appears to be consolidating leadership in preparation for high-stakes international diplomacy.
