In a deeply emotional and historic moment for one of America’s most influential churches, Bishop T.D. Jakes announced on Sunday that he is stepping down as Senior Pastor of The Potter’s House in Dallas, Texas.
The spiritual leadership of the globally recognized nondenominational megachurch will now be passed on to his daughter, Sarah Jakes Roberts, and her husband, Pastor Touré Roberts. “This is legacy,” Jakes said during his powerful sermon. “Not because they’re kin, but because they’re the kind.”
The 67-year-old bishop emphasized that the couple has been deeply involved in the life and mission of The Potter’s House for years, carrying its spiritual DNA and values.
Both Sarah and Touré Roberts have established themselves as prominent voices in ministry, particularly among younger generations, through their work with ONE Church and Woman Evolve.

Jakes’ announcement follows a heart attack he suffered in November, a life-altering event that played a significant role in his decision to transition out of active pastoral leadership. In addition, the bishop is currently involved in a defamation lawsuit against an individual who accused him of misconduct—claims he strongly denies.
Despite stepping down from the pulpit, Jakes made it clear that he’s not retiring from ministry altogether. He plans to remain deeply involved in outreach efforts, community development, and mentoring.
“I’ve seen too many men build something and stay so long that they kill what they built,” he said. “Especially after November, I can’t afford to risk something happening to me and you be sheep without a shepherd.”

Founded in 1996 by Bishop Jakes, The Potter’s House has grown into a global spiritual powerhouse, known for its dynamic worship, extensive community programs, and cultural impact. Passing the baton to Sarah and Touré marks a pivotal moment—not just for the church, but for the future of Christian leadership.
“There are things I want to do in the community before I’m too old to do them,” Jakes told the congregation. “The clock is ticking, and I cannot afford to hold on so tightly that I miss what God still wants to do through me—just in a different way.”
He urged the congregation to fully embrace their new leaders: “I’m recommending to you that you receive Pastor Touré and Pastor Sarah.”
Sarah Jakes Roberts has become one of the most sought-after voices in faith-based circles, known for her transparent storytelling, spiritual insight, and impact on women’s lives through her Woman Evolve ministry. Alongside her husband Touré, the couple has demonstrated their ability to connect with diverse audiences while staying rooted in biblical truth.
