Tensions between Russia and Ukraine remain high as the Kremlin accuses Kyiv of ignoring repeated peace overtures from President Vladimir Putin, while Ukraine questions Moscow’s sincerity in declaring a brief ceasefire.
Speaking to reporters on Tuesday, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov claimed that Russia has made multiple attempts to initiate direct peace negotiations, but has yet to receive any formal response from Ukraine.
“President Putin has repeatedly stated that Russia is ready to begin the negotiation process without any preconditions,” said Peskov. “So far, we have not heard any response from the Kyiv regime.”

The comments follow Putin’s announcement of a temporary three-day ceasefire in Ukraine, set to take place from May 8 to May 10. The timing coincides with Russia’s planned nationwide celebrations marking the 80th anniversary of the Soviet Union’s victory over Nazi Germany in World War II.

However, Ukraine swiftly questioned the gesture, pointing out that a mere three-day pause in hostilities is inadequate in the face of ongoing conflict and civilian suffering.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky criticized the Kremlin’s limited proposal, calling instead for a minimum 30-day ceasefire that could take effect immediately.

“We value human lives—not parades,” Zelensky said, underscoring the humanitarian urgency over symbolic displays.
Despite Moscow’s stated willingness for talks, Peskov acknowledged uncertainty over whether Ukraine will recognize or participate in the short ceasefire. “It is very difficult to understand Ukraine’s intentions at this point,” he added.
As both sides remain entrenched in their positions, prospects for meaningful peace talks remain distant. Meanwhile, the international community continues to watch closely, hoping for a breakthrough that could ease the devastating toll of war on millions of civilians caught in the crossfire.
