Meta Platforms, the parent company of Facebook, has officially launched a standalone app for its Meta AI assistant, signaling a bold new step in the company’s quest to dominate the competitive AI landscape.
This move places Meta in direct competition with AI giants like OpenAI (backed by Microsoft) and Google, as it ramps up its artificial intelligence offerings.
The new Meta AI app, released on Tuesday, is designed to function independently from Meta’s existing platforms—Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, and Messenger—where the assistant was previously embedded.

The launch comes ahead of the company’s Q1 earnings report and just as Meta prepares to host its inaugural AI developer event, LlamaCon, which will spotlight the capabilities of its flagship language models.

Powered by Llama 4, Meta’s latest and most advanced large language model, the standalone Meta AI app is expected to deliver faster, more accurate, and deeply personalized responses.
The assistant will pull context from users’ interactions on Facebook and Instagram to tailor its replies and perform smarter reasoning tasks across multiple languages.

Mark Zuckerberg, Meta’s CEO, has emphasized that the goal is to make AI more accessible and seamlessly integrated into daily life.
This new app represents a significant push toward that vision, especially as Meta AI becomes compatible with the company’s smart glasses and merges into the existing companion app ecosystem.

While the current version of Meta AI remains free to use, Meta plans to begin testing paid subscriptions for premium features in the second quarter of 2025. According to reports from February, however, this monetization strategy is unlikely to generate substantial revenue until sometime next year.

Launched in September 2023, Meta AI has grown steadily in functionality, offering users access to powerful AI tools ranging from search to writing, brainstorming, and productivity aids. With the release of its standalone app, Meta is clearly aiming to deepen user engagement and stand out in an increasingly crowded AI space.
As Meta moves to position itself as a major AI innovator, all eyes are now on its earnings report and the outcomes of LlamaCon, which could shed more light on its AI roadmap.
