On Easter Sunday, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky delivered a poignant and emotional message of hope, faith, and resilience to his people as the war in Ukraine entered its 1,152nd day.

Dressed in a grey traditional embroidered vyshyvanka, Zelensky stood solemnly in front of Kyiv’s iconic Saint Sophia Cathedral. In a video shared across his social media platforms, the president urged Ukrainians not to lose hope and to continue believing in the possibility of peace—no matter how long or painful the journey.

“Ukraine never loses faith,” he said, his voice calm yet resolute. “Because this faith lives in each of us—in those who stand beside you, in Ukrainian men, in Ukrainian women. Faith that evil may have its hour, but God will have His day.”

The message came on a day when both Orthodox and Western Christian churches celebrated Easter together, a rare alignment on the calendar. In a surprise move, Russian President Vladimir Putin had announced a one-day ceasefire for Easter.

However, Zelensky dismissed the gesture as insincere, saying Russian forces continued their overnight assaults, aiming to cause further damage and casualties on the front lines.

“We know what we are defending. We know what we are fighting for. For whom and for whose sake,” Zelensky affirmed, acknowledging the sacrifices made daily by Ukrainian soldiers and civilians alike.

Despite the grim reality of ongoing conflict, Zelensky’s words offered a sense of spiritual endurance. His vision for a peaceful future was clear: a day when Ukrainians can reunite at a shared table, on a peaceful Easter, in a free and whole Ukraine.

“The day of life will come. The day of peace. The day of Ukraine,” he said. “A day that lasts a century.”

Zelensky, who is Jewish, has often drawn from both personal conviction and national identity to inspire unity in a country torn by war. On this Easter, his message served not just as a religious reflection, but as a powerful reminder of Ukraine’s unwavering spirit.
