Farewell to a Gospel Giant: Nigeria Mourns the Passing of Big Bolaji at 50

Nigeria’s gospel music community is in mourning following the passing of beloved singer, minister, and ordained pastor Bolaji Olanrewaju, affectionately known as Big Bolaji or simply Big B. The renowned gospel figure died on Easter Saturday, April 19, 2025, at the age of 50, after a brief illness.

His family confirmed the heartbreaking news in an official statement released on Saturday, describing him as a “cherished father, husband, brother, and an esteemed figure in both the church and the music industry.”

“It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Bolaji Olanrewaju, affectionately known as ‘Big B’,” the statement read. “Bolaji left us on Easter Saturday after a brief illness. His departure leaves a void in our hearts that cannot be filled.”

Big Bolaji was more than just a gospel artist—he was a beacon of joy, hope, and unwavering faith. With a ministry that spanned decades, he impacted countless lives through powerful worship, uplifting songs, and a warm presence that lit up every stage and pulpit he graced.

“Bolaji’s life was a testament to his passion for music, his unwavering faith, and his dedication to uplifting those around him,” the family shared. “His legacy lives on not just in the songs he recorded, but in the lives he touched and the immeasurable joy he spread.”

A committed man of faith, Big B served the body of Christ with humility and distinction. He used his platform to build bridges of encouragement, especially among young worship leaders and aspiring gospel talents.

Just before his passing, Big B celebrated his milestone 50th birthday in a well-attended gathering filled with joy, laughter, and reflection—a true testament to a life well-lived. Friends, family, fans, and ministry colleagues joined him to mark the occasion, unaware it would be their last time celebrating with him.

His brother, Muyiwa, took to Facebook to mourn the loss with a deeply emotional message: “My baby brother is gone. Please pray for his wife and children.”

Since the news broke, an overwhelming wave of tributes has flooded social media from fans, fellow gospel artists, church leaders, and admirers across Nigeria and beyond. Many have shared personal stories of how Big Bolaji’s music lifted their spirits during tough times and how his ministry inspired them to deepen their faith.

While details of his funeral are yet to be released, the family has expressed gratitude for the love and support they have received so far, asking for continued prayers and privacy during this difficult time.

“We are deeply grateful for the support we have received and ask that you continue to keep us in your prayers. Funeral arrangements will be communicated in due course.”
