In a groundbreaking move that signals a shift in how telecoms and tech giants collaborate, MTN Group has announced a partnership with Meta aimed at enhancing the quality and reliability of real-time voice and video calls on platforms like WhatsApp.
The collaboration, which began taking shape during the Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2024, is focused on bridging the gap between mobile networks and over-the-top (OTT) communication apps.
By developing smarter, application-aware networks and more network-aware apps, the initiative seeks to ensure smoother, more efficient voice and video call experiences for users.

This marks a significant departure from the traditional standoff between telecom operators and OTT platforms. For years, telcos in Africa have voiced concerns over declining revenues from voice calls as users increasingly opt for data-driven communication services like WhatsApp, Messenger, and others.

Instead of viewing each other as adversaries, MTN and Meta are now demonstrating how collaboration can bring mutual benefits—and, most importantly, better service for the end user.

The impact is already being felt. MTN revealed that the joint efforts have begun yielding measurable improvements in both call performance and overall network efficiency across Nigeria and 11 other markets.
Yahaya Ibrahim, Chief Technical Officer at MTN Nigeria, expressed satisfaction with the progress so far:
“We’re excited about the noticeable enhancements in our real-time communication services. This reflects MTN’s commitment to leveraging innovation to deliver superior customer experiences.”

Echoing this optimism, Diego Marí, Meta’s Head of Network Ecosystems Engineering, added:
“Our collaboration with MTN allows us to roll out cutting-edge solutions that enhance the real-time communication experience for millions of users in Nigeria. It underscores our commitment to service quality and traffic delivery efficiency.”
With this partnership, MTN and Meta are not only enhancing the user experience but also setting a new precedent for how telecoms and tech companies can work together in Africa’s fast-evolving digital landscape.
