For the first time since signing with Manchester United in 2023, goalkeeper Andre Onana was absent from a Premier League matchday squad, missing the Red Devils’ trip to St. James’ Park.
The absence came just days after a difficult night in the Europa League, where Onana was at fault for both goals in United’s 2-2 draw with Lyon in the quarter-final first leg.
In his place, Altay Bayindir stepped up and was handed his Premier League debut. The decision sparked curiosity among fans and pundits alike, with many wondering whether Onana had been dropped or simply rested.

Speaking to Sky Sports, head coach Rúben Amorim shed some light on the reasoning behind the goalkeeper’s absence, emphasizing the importance of mental recovery as much as the physical.
“You have to see the context,” Amorim said. “Sometimes you need to push a player to play again quickly, and sometimes you have to let him disconnect a little. Andre will be back in training tomorrow to prepare for the second leg against Lyon. I felt this was a good moment to let him breathe.”
Amorim, known for his thoughtful player management, made it clear that the decision wasn’t taken lightly and was communicated to Onana in advance.

“You don’t need to like it, but you understand when everything is explained. People often only consider the physical demands on a player, but the mental aspect is just as crucial,” he added. “It’s just one game, and tomorrow is a new day.”

The manager made five changes to the starting XI that played out a goalless draw with Manchester City the previous weekend. Among them was the introduction of 18-year-old Harry Amass, who made his full debut for the senior side — another bold move that speaks to Amorim’s willingness to trust youth in moments that matter.
Former United captain Roy Keane, speaking as a pundit on Sky Sports, supported the idea of giving Onana a break. “He’s under pressure — that’s the reality,” Keane said.

“When you’re a goalkeeper and you make mistakes that lead to goals, the spotlight’s always on you. I think it makes sense to rest him over the weekend, let him reset, and bring him back for the big game on Thursday.”
Keane also noted the challenge of throwing a backup goalkeeper into such a high-pressure situation without much recent game time.
“It’s tough for another goalkeeper to come in and get up to speed quickly, but maybe this is about recharging Onana’s batteries before the return leg against Lyon. That’s part of the manager’s job — making those tough calls.”

With the second leg looming and United still in the hunt for European glory, all eyes will be on how Onana responds. Will the short break help him bounce back stronger? Amorim is betting on it.
