French President Emmanuel Macron has issued a passionate call for “strong action” against Russia, following a devastating missile attack that killed 20 people—including nine children—in Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky’s hometown of Kryvyi Rih.
The missile strike, which hit a residential neighborhood near a children’s playground on April 4, is one of the deadliest recent assaults in Russia’s ongoing war in Ukraine. Among the victims was a three-year-old boy, one of the youngest casualties of a war that has seen thousands of innocent lives lost.
Posting in both French and Ukrainian on X (formerly Twitter), Macron expressed his sorrow and outrage: “My thoughts are with the children and all civilian victims of the bloody attacks carried out by Russia, including on April 4 in Kryvyi Rih.”

Macron emphasized that despite diplomatic efforts led by both the United States and European nations—including a recent ceasefire proposal reportedly accepted by Ukraine—Russia continues to escalate the conflict.

“A ceasefire is needed as soon as possible. And strong action if Russia continues to try to buy time and refuse peace,” he wrote.
The French leader’s remarks come as Ukrainian officials report a sharp rise in Russian airstrikes. Over the weekend, a “massive” missile and drone attack was launched across several regions of Ukraine, killing at least two more civilians and further fueling fears of intensified warfare.

President Zelensky confirmed the uptick in assaults, stating that Moscow is stepping up its aerial bombardment campaign. “The pressure on Russia is still insufficient,” Zelensky said on Sunday.
The comments from both leaders underscore the growing frustration among Western allies that, despite ongoing diplomatic overtures and military support for Ukraine, Russia remains committed to its aggressive strategy—often with devastating consequences for civilians.
