In a bold and uncompromising statement, U.S. President Donald Trump has threatened Iran with military action and economic sanctions if it fails to reach an agreement with Washington over its nuclear program.

Speaking in a telephone interview with NBC News on Sunday, Trump confirmed that U.S. and Iranian officials were engaged in discussions but refrained from providing specifics.

“If they don’t make a deal, there will be bombing,” Trump stated bluntly. “But there’s also a chance that if they refuse to negotiate, I will impose secondary tariffs on them, just like I did four years ago.”

This remark echoes Trump’s actions during his first term (2017–2021), when he withdrew the U.S. from the 2015 Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), an agreement between Iran and world powers that had imposed strict limits on Tehran’s nuclear activities in exchange for sanctions relief.

Following the U.S. withdrawal, the Trump administration reimposed sweeping sanctions on Iran, crippling its economy. In response, Tehran ramped up its uranium enrichment program beyond the agreed limits, further escalating tensions.

Despite Trump’s stark warning, Iran has shown no signs of backing down. According to Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi, Tehran recently responded to a letter from Trump—delivered through Oman—urging Iran to negotiate a new deal. However, the details of Iran’s reply remain undisclosed.

Western nations have long accused Iran of pursuing a covert agenda to develop nuclear weapons by enriching uranium beyond levels necessary for civilian energy production. Tehran, however, maintains that its nuclear program is strictly for peaceful purposes, aimed at generating power for civilian use.
