The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has announced the temporary closure of Samuel Ladoke Akintola Airport (SLAA) in Ibadan, Oyo State, to facilitate crucial infrastructure upgrades.
This move, approved by the Federal Government of Nigeria, aims to enhance operational standards and support the airport’s transition from a domestic to an international hub.
According to FAAN’s Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection, Obiageli Orah, the closure is necessary to execute key improvements that will modernize the airport and ensure compliance with aviation safety regulations.

The upgrade is part of the Oyo State Government’s initiative to elevate SLAA’s status, making it capable of handling international flights and improving overall passenger experience.

While FAAN has not yet provided a specific timeline for reopening, travelers who frequently use the Ibadan airport will need to consider alternative routes and nearby airports for their journeys. Airlines and aviation authorities will likely provide updates on flight diversions and rescheduling options in the coming weeks.

This upgrade aligns with Nigeria’s broader efforts to modernize aviation infrastructure, ensuring that regional airports meet international safety and operational standards. By expanding Ibadan’s airport capacity, the state government aims to boost economic activities, attract foreign investment, and enhance connectivity for both business and leisure travelers.
