Nigeria’s quest for a place at the 2026 FIFA World Cup received a much-needed boost as the Super Eagles secured a 2-0 victory over Rwanda, thanks to a brilliant brace from Victor Osimhen.

Coming into this crucial match, Nigeria found themselves in a precarious position, sitting fifth in Group C after a disappointing start—three draws and a defeat in their first four qualifiers. However, this win has reignited their campaign, offering fresh hope as they push for a spot at football’s grandest stage.

Under the guidance of new head coach Eric Chelle, the Super Eagles wasted no time in asserting their dominance. Just 11 minutes into the match, Ademola Lookman delivered a pinpoint free-kick, which Osimhen expertly met at the back post to break the deadlock.

Nigeria nearly doubled their lead soon after, but Rwanda’s goalkeeper, Fiacre Ntwari, produced a fine save to deny Moses Simon. Captain William Troost-Ekong also came close on two occasions from set pieces, but his efforts narrowly missed the target.

As the first half neared its conclusion, Nigeria struck again. Osimhen, ever the poacher, latched onto a well-timed pass and coolly slotted home his second goal of the afternoon, giving Rwanda an uphill task for the second half.

Despite Rwanda’s spirited fightback, there was no repeat of their dramatic comeback from November’s fixture, where they overturned a deficit to claim victory. This time, Nigeria remained composed and in control, ensuring they took home all three points.

With this crucial win, the Super Eagles have climbed the standings and will now look to build momentum in the remaining qualifiers. The performance, particularly Osimhen’s clinical finishing, offers plenty of optimism for Nigerian fans dreaming of a return to the World Cup stage.
