Germany has approved a fresh €3 billion ($3.25 billion) military aid package for Ukraine, offering a crucial boost as the country continues its fight against Russian forces.

The decision, made by the German parliament’s budget committee on Friday, comes at a pivotal moment—just days before planned US-brokered negotiations between Moscow and Kyiv on a potential limited truce.

The newly allocated funds will support Ukraine with essential defence equipment, including munitions, drones, armoured vehicles, and air defence systems. A key part of the package will go toward German-made Iris-T air defence systems, which are still in production and expected to be delivered over the next two years.

This aid package had been delayed for months due to internal disagreements within the coalition government led by outgoing Chancellor Olaf Scholz.

However, its approval was facilitated by the passage of a broader spending plan, which also eases Germany’s strict debt limits on defence expenditures. This financial shift has given the government more flexibility in supporting Ukraine.

The decision was met with relief by members of Germany’s Greens party, which has been a strong advocate for Ukraine.

MP Britta Hasselmann welcomed the move, describing it as a “strong signal” of support for Ukraine and emphasizing its importance for European peace and security. While she acknowledged the delay, she stressed that the aid remains essential in helping Ukraine defend itself.

Germany’s commitment to Ukraine extends beyond this latest package. The 2025 budget already includes €4 billion in planned military aid, while an additional €8.3 billion has been earmarked for support between 2026 and 2029. The long-term strategy highlights Berlin’s continued backing of Kyiv in the face of Russian aggression.

As truce talks approach, the approval of this military aid underscores Europe’s determination to stand by Ukraine. Whether this move will influence the negotiations or signal a prolonged conflict remains to be seen.
