Manchester United has officially announced plans to construct a brand-new 100,000-seater stadium, which co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe envisions as the “world’s greatest” football ground.
This groundbreaking decision follows an extensive consultation process, evaluating whether to redevelop the club’s historic Old Trafford or build a new stadium in its vicinity. Ultimately, the club opted for the latter, working in collaboration with the Old Trafford Regeneration Task Force to bring this vision to life.
In a statement, the club confirmed its “intention to pursue a new 100,000-seater stadium as the centrepiece of the regeneration of the Old Trafford area.” The ambitious project is expected to be completed within five years, making it one of the most significant infrastructure developments in European football.
On Tuesday, scaled models and conceptual images of the new stadium and surrounding district were unveiled at the London headquarters of Foster + Partners, the architectural firm appointed in September to lead the design.

The renderings showcased a state-of-the-art stadium designed to redefine the matchday experience while honoring the club’s storied legacy.
Sir Jim Ratcliffe expressed his excitement about the project, emphasizing the balance between tradition and progress. “Today marks the beginning of an incredibly exciting journey to deliver what will be the world’s greatest football stadium, at the heart of a regenerated Old Trafford,” he said.
“Our current stadium has served us brilliantly for the past 115 years, but it has fallen behind the best arenas in world sport.”

By building the new stadium adjacent to the existing site, Manchester United aims to “preserve the essence of Old Trafford while creating a truly state-of-the-art venue that transforms the fan experience only footsteps from our historic home.”
Beyond football, the stadium and the broader redevelopment initiative are set to inject a significant economic boost into the UK. According to projections, the project could generate an additional £7.3 billion ($9.4 billion) annually, with the potential creation of 92,000 new jobs.
Sebastian Coe, who chaired the Old Trafford Regeneration Task Force, hailed the project as a transformative moment for Manchester. “This marks an important step forward in what I firmly believe can be the biggest and most exciting urban regeneration project in the UK since the 2012 London Olympics,” he said.
Manchester United’s legendary former manager, Sir Alex Ferguson, has thrown his support behind the move, recognizing the necessity for progress. “Manchester United should always strive for the best in everything it does, on and off the pitch, and that includes the stadium we play in,” Ferguson remarked.
“Old Trafford holds so many special memories for me personally, but we must be brave and seize this opportunity to build a new home, fit for the future, where new history can be made.”
While the exact financial framework is yet to be finalized, the club remains confident in securing the necessary investment. Manchester United’s chief executive, Omar Berrada, described the project as a “very attractive investment opportunity,” adding that they are optimistic about finding the right financial partners to bring the vision to reality.
Although the exact start date remains uncertain, the club plans to construct sections of the stadium off-site before transporting them via the Manchester Ship Canal. This innovative approach could accelerate the building process and ensure the project meets its ambitious five-year timeline.
