Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has expressed his desire to “make things right” with U.S. President Donald Trump following a public fallout and the unexpected suspension of U.S. military aid to Ukraine.

Zelensky’s remarks, shared via social media on Tuesday, underscored his commitment to working under Trump’s leadership to secure a lasting peace for his war-torn country.

The fallout stems from a contentious meeting in the White House last Friday, where tensions between the two leaders became apparent. “Our meeting in Washington, at the White House on Friday, did not go the way it was supposed to,” Zelensky acknowledged. “It is time to make things right.”

Trump’s decision to halt military aid to Ukraine has sent shockwaves through Kyiv and European capitals, raising concerns about a potential shift in U.S. foreign policy. With Ukraine heavily reliant on American support in its ongoing war, the abrupt suspension has left the country scrambling to reassess its strategy.

The move has also drawn a strong reaction from Moscow. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov welcomed Trump’s decision, calling it “a solution that could really push the Kyiv regime toward a peace process.”

Meanwhile, European leaders have responded with urgency, recognizing the growing need to bolster Ukraine’s defense capabilities independently of Washington.

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen unveiled an ambitious plan on Tuesday to mobilize approximately 800 billion euros ($840 billion) for Europe’s defense.

The initiative aims to strengthen military support for Ukraine and provide the country with immediate military equipment. With the U.S. pivoting away from its previous role as Ukraine’s primary supporter, the European Union is now racing to fill the gap.

This development comes ahead of an emergency EU summit scheduled for Thursday, where European leaders will seek to solidify their collective stance on Ukraine and ensure continued assistance in the face of shifting geopolitical dynamics.

As tensions rise, Zelensky is also advocating for a temporary truce in Ukraine’s sea and airspace as an initial step toward ending the war. Additionally, he has pledged to finalize a key minerals agreement with Washington, aiming to maintain economic and strategic ties despite the current diplomatic strain.
